Nesting During Divorce: What Attorneys Need to Know
February 28, 2024
(12:00 p.m. - 1:15 p.m. PT)
More divorcing parents than ever are opting for a birdnesting custody arrangement. Also known as simply “nesting,” this shared custody plan means that children stay in the home, while each parent rotates as the main caregiver according to an agreed-on schedule. A child-centered approach, nesting can alleviate stress on the children by minimizing the changes inherent in constantly moving from one home to another, and it secures their relationship to each parent in an environment that feels safe.
Of course, nesting doesn’t work for everyone — and it poses significant risks. In this session, Dr. Ann Gold Buscho, author of one of the most influential books on the topic, will discuss the advantages, risks, and best practices for your clients who are considering a nesting arrangement.
- Learn what nesting is — and how your clients can determine if it’s the right choice for them
- Explore various nesting arrangements and how they benefit the children and their co-parents
- Identify specific ways to develop a nesting plan, including a co-parenting plan, financial considerations, and home responsibilities
- Outline nesting “deal breakers” and how to avoid them with the right agreements in place
